Jimmy Smith – Root Down (Verve Acoustic Sounds) 180g Vinyl LP
Root Down was Hammond B-3 jazz legend Jimmy Smith’s 1972 live jazz album for Verve. Recorded in Los Angeles on February 8, 1972, it includes the title track, which was sampled by the Beastie Boys for their song “Root Down.” The song peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Top Jazz Album charts.

Originally released by Theresa in 1992, this frequently exquisite set features the McCoy Tyner-inspired piano of Joe Bonner on four originals, Cal Massey’s Quiet Dawn, and Lush Life.
Bonner and a rhythm section are joined by a string quartet, trumpet, trombone, and flutist Holly Hofmann (the leader provided the arrangements) for music that is both lyrical and often passionate.
Bonner is an underrated talent, and this is one of his finest recordings

Do you remember what you did you on the evening of 13 January 1972? A multitude of Japanese jazz lovers walked or drove to the grand Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo where they enjoyed a veritable firework display of a concert, which was – without exaggeration – a milestone in the history of jazz. The technicians from the Japanese subsidiary of Columbia, Sony, had placed their microphones and tape machines with great care and captured this memorable concert live.
Two of the numbers had already been recorded in New York with the same group of musicians for the album I Sing The Body Electric. But to experience Weather Report live with this ensemble was only granted to the enthusiastic Japanese jazz fans.
