Ornette Coleman – The Shape Of Jazz To Come – Speakers Corner 180g Vinyl

£35.00
It was John Lewis, pianist of the Modern Jazz Quartet, who brought Ornette Coleman to the renowned Atlantic label, having heard him play in Los Angeles. »Ornette Coleman is doing the only really new thing in jazz …« he reportedly said. The present initial Atlantic album was released just in time to coincide with the New York debut of the Coleman Quartet in November 1959. Lewis was sure that Coleman would open up new paths for jazz, and his opinion is reflected in the title of the album – “The Shape Of Jazz To Come”.

Oscar Peterson Trio – Live At Concertgebouw 1961 – The Lost Recordings 2LP 180g Vinyl

£70.00
It is 9 p.m. on February 10, 1961, when Norman Granz takes the stage of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw to present one of the most sensational concerts of the Oscar Peterson Trio. Norman Granz is the greatest impesario and producer in the history of Jazz. Behind the scenes is his protégé, the one he discovered by chance one night in 1949 on the radio of a Montreal taxi, the one he would lead to the top of the pianists. The one he presents that evening as "the Ineffable". It can be said that Peterson plays 100 notes when others play 10, but this virtuosity is not disturbing when it is so perfectly placed in the service of music. The fluidity of the first notes of the introduction sets the tone for an exceptional concert... This is the first release of this recording.

Similar in concept to her earlier classic NIGHTCLUB, CLIQUE! gives Patricia and her long-time band (Jon Deitemyer, drums; Patrick Mulcahy, bass; Neal Alger, guitar; Jim Gailloreto, tenor sax) a stellar showcase for their telepathic musical communication and consummate jazz chops. Pharoah Sanders – Shukuru – Pure Pleasure Records 180g Vinyl LP

£39.95
Pharoah Sanders’ “Shukuru” is noteworthy as being the album that reunited Sanders with vocalist Leon Thomas, who sang on some of Sanders’ most endearing and powerful compositions– among them the legendary “The Creator Has a Masterplan”. Thomas only joins the band on two tracks– “Mas in Brooklyn (Highlife)” and “Sun Song”. The former gets a full calypso reading complete with steel drum sounds and chanted vocals traded between Sanders and Thomas. It’s a lot of fun, but by and large, throwaway. The latter is one of the true gems on the album– a pretty ballad that serves as both a launching point for Sanders’ best balladry and Thomas’ vocal, with the latter soaring in his upper register wordlessly between verses intoned in his trademark baritone. It’s by and large simply stunning.

Pharoah Sanders – Live – Theresa Records 180 Vinyl 2 LP Gatefold Sleeve

£49.95
This album features Pharoah Sanders playing some no-nonsense tenor in a quartet with pianist John Hicks, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Idris Muhammad. Sanders performs “It’s Easy to Remember” (in a style very reminiscent of early-’60s John Coltrane), an original blues, and two of his compositions, including the passionate “You’ve Got to Have Freedom.”
The musicianship is at a high level and, although Sanders does not shriek as much as one might hope (the Trane-ish influence was particularly strong during this relatively mellow period), he is in fine form. Review by Scott Yanow/AMG
