It is 9 p.m. on February 10, 1961, when Norman Granz takes the stage of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw to present one of the most sensational concerts of the Oscar Peterson Trio. Norman Granz is the greatest impesario and producer in the history of Jazz. Behind the scenes is his protégé, the one he discovered by chance one night in 1949 on the radio of a Montreal taxi, the one he would lead to the top of the pianists. The one he presents that evening as "the Ineffable". It can be said that Peterson plays 100 notes when others play 10, but this virtuosity is not disturbing when it is so perfectly placed in the service of music. The fluidity of the first notes of the introduction sets the tone for an exceptional concert... This is the first release of this recording.

Very Tall, released in 1961, features the first partnership between Oscar Peterson and vibraphonist Milt Jackson. The quartet set (which also includes bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) swings as hard as one might expect. Highlights include “On Green Dolphin Street,” "John Brown's Body" (a jam on "Battle Hymn of the Republic") and "Reunion Blues." Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

The guts of the story are this: While on tour with the Bar-Kays in August 1967, Otis Redding's popularity was rising, and he was inundated with fans at his hotel in downtown San Francisco. Looking for a retreat, he accepted rock concert impresario Bill Graham's offer to stay at his houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California. Inspired, Redding started writing the lines, "Sittin' in the morning sun, I'll be sittin' when the evening comes" and the first verse of a song, under the abbreviated title "Dock of the Bay."

Guitarist Steve Cropper contributed guitar on the album, and is also credited as the co-author of three tracks.
