In January of 1963, bassist and composer Charles Mingus recorded a very personal and socially conscious work he titled The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady. Each composition, from the opening “Solo Dancer” to the closing “Group and Solo Dance” was a musical expression of Mingus’ philosophy of life, love and the world around him.

Mingus Takes Manhattan collects together Charles Mingus’ run of dates at the world famous Birdland, New York from 1961-1962, released here officially for the first time ever in conjunction with the Mingus Estate.
The original reel-to-reel tapes used to record the radio broadcasts were tracked down, cleaned and remastered especially for this release. Previously only issued in bootleg form, the recordings enclosed feature Mingus in the midst of a highly creative spell.
Alternating between bass and piano during these sets features a rotating band of heavy hitters including Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk, Jaki Byard, Booker Ervin, Pepper Adams as well as Mingus mainstays Charles McPherson, Dannie Richmond and others.

After several sessions with Columbia and Candid, Charles Mingus briefly returned to Atlantic and cut the freewheeling Oh Yeah, which AllMusic says has to rank as the wildest of all his classic albums. Mingus displays all of his vigorous jazz feeling on this album; he plays no bass whatsoever, hiring Doug Watkins to fill in while he accompanies the group on piano and contributes bluesy vocals to several tracks (while shouting encouragement on nearly all of them).

This audiophile demonstration album contains 13 tracks which were recorded with 50 year old Neumann valve microphones.
Many tracks use the “Decca tree” configuration, invented by engineers in the early 1950’s using 3 Neumann M50 microphones.
Some tracks were recorded with a 1/2″ Studer reel to reel recorder running at 30ips.

McEvoy’s latest album “Forgotten Dreams” (2019) was recorded in Air Studios in London as a Direct-Cut-to-Vinyl. This means that the album is recorded as the performance is happening in the studio. There is no editing or overdubbing. The entire side of the album, 20 minutes of music, has to be recorded non-stop without any mistakes, noises, string breakages, technical issues etc. and there is only one shot at it.
